Comedy drama.

2010. 102 min.

With Troye Sivan, John Cleese and Jamie Royal.

Director: Donovan Marsh.

10LVS. Rating: 4/5

Based on the popular book by John van de Ruit, this is the coming-of-age tale of John Milton (Sivan), who at 13 wins a scholarship to a prestigious boys’ school in Kwazulu-Natal in 1990.

Spud desperately wants to fit in with the cool guys in his dorm but is lumped with the nerds.

The only bright spot between bouts of hazing and disastrous cricket matches is his friendship with The Guv (Cleese), his eccentric English teacher.

Scriptwriter/director Marsh does a fine job of streamlining an episodic novel into an engaging and coherent narrative.

South African politics are seamlessly incorporated into the film and give the story an authentic local feel without overriding the central plot.

Comedy is interspersed with tragedy and Sivan is outstanding as the naive hero trying to find his place in the world. His scenes with Cleese ring true and special mention must go to Royal as lovable oddball Gecko.

Bonus: featurettes, commentary, deleted scenes.
