Meet the two toughest geeks on the right side of the law, and they’re women! Leon van Nierop talks about the new acition comedy The Heat.

Action comedy. With Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy and Demian Bichir. Director: Paul Feig. 16LVD. Opens 23 August.

Meet the two toughest geeks on the right side of the law, and they’re women! McCarthy and Bullock play this odd couple – a policewoman and an FBI agent with more testosterone than most men and a vocabulary to make a sailor blush. And while they have more hair on their chests than their male counterparts their pitch-black sense of humour leaves the thugs they pursue speechless. You’ll find yourself laughing even when you don’t want to as you watch these two turn the criminal underworld upside down, then give it a good kick to boot. Be warned though: the vulgar humour and relentless swearing isn’t for the faint of heart. But you’ll enjoy the movie because the characters are natural and believable and their twisted sense of humour is funny. They’ve suffered unfair treatment by men all their lives and you understand that they’re taking revenge on a chauvinist world that denies them an existence. It’s the kind of common, hysterically funny comedy you should see with your girlfriends before a bachelorette party, or when you’ve had enough of men who don’t appreciate you. This female version of The Hangover is as tough as nails – and very, very funny. Rating 3/5.
