This compassionate, humane comedy about growing up is easily one of the three best movies of the year. A geek (brilliantly underplayed by James) doesn’t fit in anywhere, especially not after his mom marries a bully (a surprising performance by Steve Carell) – but a visit to a holiday resort changes everyone’s lives. Making fun of geeks is often the last hope of Hollywood scriptwriters who’ve run out of ideas, but not in this case. Anyone can identify with this lost, clumsy but clever boy who just wants to be himself – not a superstar or a sex symbol, just an ordinary guy. His road to finding acceptance, especially after he meets the unorthodox resort manager (the ever-reliable Rockwell), will grip and inspire you like nothing since The Perks of Being a Wallflower. These characters are real people, their lives filled with small catastrophes that lead to hilarious confusion – and which the directors convincingly pull together into a story. It’s gripping, enriching and will bring colour to your life. Janney’s performance is easily the funniest of the year. This movie will put you in a good mood, ready to face the world again. It’s everything a film should be. Rating 4/5
