Little did Roberto know a night out with his dad would change his life forever.

“Now I have to look after my mother and sisters,” says Roberto Jacobs, whose father tragically died after he collapsed at a hangout in Vanderbijlpark last week Friday.

Roberto (23) and his father, Robert (46), a local maize farmer, were relaxing at the Infinity bar on Thursday when a fight broke out.

“The next moment I heard someone scream, ‘the man fell!’” says Roberto about the bar fight that allegedly claimed his father’s life.

He says they were calmly sitting and chatting when a fight broke out nearby. As the father and son were trying to break up the fight, Robert was hit on the head.

“When I turned around my father was lying on the floor and his head was bleeding.”

Roberto raced his father to the Sebokeng Hospital in Vanderbijlpark and he was later transferred to the Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg. On Sunday he died in hospital.

Sergeant Gertrude Makhale of Vanderbijlpark’s police office confirmed that a case of assault was opened over the weekend. After Robert’s death, it was changed to a murder investigation.

Deon Bester, co-owner of Infinity, would not comment on the incident. He says there is, unfortunately, no footage of the fight available because as new owners they’re still trying to set up the bar.

The family is still waiting for the results of the post-mortem investigation.

Robert is also survived by his wife Izan (46), daughters Theoline (30) and Mikie (21), as well as a granddaughter. A memorial service is expected to be held next week.
