All 172 passengers and crew managed to escape the flames and smoke when a British Airways (BA) aircraft caught alight shorty before departing for London on Tuesday.

The fire in one of the plane’s two engines caused black smoke to pour into the cabin and panicked passengers rushed to the front of the plane, someone on board tweeted.

Scores of passengers and crew members were slightly injured and were taken to hospital after everyone on board had escaped down the Boeing 777’s emergency slides.

“Mayday, Mayday, Speedbird 2276 requests the fire brigade,” one of the pilots is heard to say calmly on a soundbite posted online. “We are evacuating the runway. We have a fire. I repeat: we are evacuating.”

The plane’s left engine caught alight during take-off, and videos and photographs taken at the scene show the wide-bodied jet in flames and thick, black smoke hanging over the international airport McCarran. The plane had 159 passengers and 13 crew members on board.

“Our crew evacuated the plane safely and emergency services at the airport quickly extinguished the fire,” a BA spokesperson said.

In a photograph posted by the airport after the incident, the aircraft can be seen standing on the runway with a burnt tail section.
