Win a Nissan Livina X-Gear worth R193 700!

In today's adventure Jan takes an epic ride on his bike in the mountains surrounding Stellenbosch. Of course he wouldn't be Jan Braai without some time spent standing over one, and the sporty Nissan Livina X-Gear is just the car to get him there.

I’VE travelled a lot but Stellenbosch is where my roots are and always will be. This scenic town is generally known for its wine farms and students but it also has a great outdoor culture, and adrenaline rushes around every corner. See, Stellenbosch has some of the most awesome mountain biking in the country – there are trails with something for every skill level, so you can choose your adventure and sweat level!

I’ve been cycling for almost as long as I can remember – my mom still has pictures of me as a laaitie standing next to my first BMX, a shiny silver one! I’ve had more falls, bumps and bruises than your average oke, but once mountain biking is in your blood, it’s addictive. Just like braaiing, mountain biking is social and you can get your mates together to have a good time. It’s like that old saying – with hard work comes great reward, and here in the mountains we’ll have both. And then some.

Some things in life improve with time – such as cars and fine wine. Today I’m arriving in the Nissan Livina X-Gear. It’s a far cry from my grandpa’s old tractor we used to ride on at his farm when I was a boy plus, fuel consumption in my Livina X-Gear is way, way better, not to mention it has fewer emissions. Fortunately I never took a tractor to school, but that silver BMX had to get me there and back home up the hill in the afternoons. It’s a little-known fact but these mountains have some of the country’s best bike tracks and the Livina X-Gear is a great vehicle for hauling yourself, your mates and all your gear to the bottom of one such trail.

The car suits the environment perfectly; it has a powerful look while still being sleek and adventurous. The Livina X-Gear looks as if it’s been seriously working out – it has those aggressive fl ares on the wheel arches, roof rails, fl are on the bonnet and sloping roofline that make it look truly sporty. It looks a bit like my bodybuilder friend Jan de Villiers – he’s so muscular he turns heads and people can’t help but stare. The drive to Stellies is a similar experience; people keep smiling at us as we drive past, but that’s because of my Livina X-Gear – bodybuilder Jan didn’t join us this time.

The raised ride height means you have extra ground clearance, making travelling on gravel easy and comfortable. Unlike the Livina X-Gear a mountain bike doesn’t have ABS or airbags so make sure you always wear a crash helmet when you cycle. The beauty of the Livina X-Gear is you have plenty of space for the extras such as camping chairs, an umbrella and even a braai kit. Every man should carry a mobile braai kit around, you never know when you might need one!

Today we’re taking a long slow cycle up the dirt tracks then a rapid trip down the single track – what a rush! I love the challenge of the tough climb up a hill, followed by navigating the boulders and trees down the rocky other side. You might come down the hill looking more than a little dirty, but any grime, bumps or scratches are worth the adrenaline rush. Unfortunately my mate Morné recently took a bit of a slide and ended up tangling with a rock. Rock – 1; Morné – 0! As the sun nears the horizon more of my friends have joined us in the mountains. I’m making a chicken Caesar salad, something healthy and light after an active day.

I pop some seasoned chicken breasts on the braai and I already have the prepared lettuce washed, as well as the ready-boiled eggs sitting in the cooler box. All I need is to place some slices of white bread on the braai, and when toasted, cut into squares like croutons. When the chicken is ready, I slice it up and add it to the salad along with the boiled eggs and croutons, and drizzle some Caesar dressing over. It’s not unusual for me to serve food from a bowl and not directly off the braai. Not all braais need to be stereotypical, so do whatever and in whichever way you fancy. Variety is the spice of life in the same way salt is the spice of a braai. As I always say, “If you love the earth, then braai”, but just make sure your coles are dead when you leave – you don’t want to burn down the mountain!

Packing up is easy with the spacious Livina X-Gear’s boot and I can follow my friends as they cycle back to the road, showing them the way with the bright Livina X-Gear headlights. The way the guys ride, we’re back on the road within a few minutes and the bikes simply clip onto the rack and away we go for the journey back to Cape Town. I know that after an awesome day spent in nature I can rely on the Livina X-Gear to get me and my passengers home in comfort and safety.

Someone once said a life worth living is an everyday adventure. And thanks to Nissan’s Livina X-Gear and my love of opportunities, my life sure is one daring adventure. I hope you too join the ride and fi nd things that ignite your passion because, after all, adventure and passion are the “meat and potatoes” of life.

In the past four weeks my mates and I have experienced snoek shopping, surfski paddling, wine tasting and mountain biking with the Livina X-Gear. I couldn’t have done this without the X-Gear; it’s a serious car for someone with an incredible appetite for adventure. For now though, it’s time to give the Livina X-Gear a well-deserved valet service. To get this recipe and those from my previous adventures don’t forget to follow us on Facebook.

And YOU readers, if you’re feeling adventurous get to your nearest Nissan dealer and test drive the Livina X-Gear for yourself.  Remember: Say no to gas, use wood! This is Jan Braai signing off.
