Sean's bandages are off and he's out of ICU.

The teenager from Pretoria who suffered burn wounds in a freak accident last month has been moved from the Milpark Hospital’s intensive care unit.

“We got permission to take him to the hospitals cafeteria in a wheelchair. We also take him for regular walks,” says Amoré Jooste, a family friend.

Sean Smith suffered third degree burns when he was helping a woman whose car was leaking oil.

After inspecting the car, he took off his shirt and threw petrol on it to wipe the oil off his hands. He then put the shirt back on but it caught alight on his body when somebody near him lit a cigarette.

Sean doesn’t have medical aid and waited days for a bed in a state hospital’s burn victims unit. Eventually some kind-hearted Samaritan’s opened their hearts to Sean and his mother and more than R800 000 was raised to transfer him to the Milpark Hospital burn victims unit in Johannesburg.

Mé-Lissa, Sean’s mother, previously told YOU, that it feels as though she’s stuck in a nightmare that she can’t wake up from.

“He’s in a normal ward now and it’s wonderful that we can go and visit him,” says Amoré.

“We just took him outside to get some fresh air. We just need to make sure that he stays in the shade,” says Amoré.

According to her the wounds in Sean’s neck have healed nicely and he won’t need a skin transplant in that area.

“We’re going to sit down to eat with him now and then we’re going to take him outside again,” says Amoré.
