1. FORD RANGER 3,2 TDCi WILDRAK - a safe choice: 5/5

The local double-cab market offers several thrilling options that are all worth considering. Nearly all the main players offer new versions of old favourites, such as the Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok.

Now Ford enters the market with the Ranger, which ticks all the right boxes to make it a class leader – top-quality manufacturing, a powerful, modern engine, an interior with high-quality finishes and excellent workhorse performance.

And it’s a handsome-looking car!

Anton Vermeulen: Macho in capitals. I think it’s the best-looking double-cab/SUV on the market. It’s well equipped and the heated windscreen is a first in its market segment.

 PRICE R413 650

 ENGINE 3,2-litre, six-cylinder petrol; 147 kW; 470 Nm

PERFORMANCE 0-100 km/h, top speed not available; 8,4 l/100 km

SECOND-HAND OPTION Rather buy the new Ranger!

2. KIA SEDONA 2,2 CRDi - comfort zone: 4/5

Kia’s Sedona might not be the latest people carrier on the market but it’s a definite contender if you’re looking for a luxury seven-seater.

The Sedona has a new 2,2-litre diesel engine that not only makes it nippier but also lighter on fuel than its 2,9-litre predecessor.

The vehicle, which is available only as an automatic, now has a six-speed gearbox. The many luxuries and enjoyable ride add to the driver and passengers’ comfort. Kia’s successful soundproofing coupled with the Sedona’s superb handling make for a luxurious driving experience.

Anton Vermeulen: It’s like a comfy lounge on wheels. If I had the money I’d buy it. It’s the perfect family vehicle.

 PRICE R419 995

 ENGINE 2,2-litre, four-cylinder diesel; 143 kW; 436 Nm

 PERFORMANCE 0-100 km/h in 11 sec; top speed 196 km/h; 8,88 l/100 km

 COMPETITORS Chrysler Voyager, Peugeot 5008

3. TOYOTA YARIS 1,0 Xs - great reputation: 3/5

When Toyota launched the Yaris in South Africa in 2005 it was a runaway success. Toyota now hopes the new-generation Yaris will surpass its predecessor’s performance. But this is a very different vehicle.

While the older Yaris had a trendy design with a contemporary dashboard, the new one is conservative and robust in appearance. Inside it’s bigger and there’s more luggage room at the back.

Competition for newcomers is however much stiffer now than when the Yaris was first launched, with strong contenders such as the Kia Rio and Hyundai i20.

Elna van der Merwe: It’s time to trade in my beloved Yaris but it won’t be for the new model. This one is aimed at young guys who like stubby-nosed cars with a big, fat backside. Sadly this new model lacks a feminine touch.

 PRICE R145 700

 ENGINE 1-litre, three-cylinder; 51 kW; 93 Nm

 PERFORMANCE 0-100 km/h in 15,3 sec; top speed 155 km/h; 6,12 l/100 km

 COMPETITORS Hyundai i20; Kia Rio

 SECOND-HAND OPTION A year-old Volkswagen Polo
