The talk-show powerhouse came close to a nervous breakdown – but she picked herself up and is now tipped for Oscar glory

For more than a quarter of a century she’s helped TV viewers to sort out their lives. Oozing self-confidence from every pore, she encouraged her millions of fans to dream big and taught them that with enough self-belief anything was possible.

Easy enough to say when you’re the world’s No 1 talk-show queen with an esti- mated fortune of $2,8 billion (R28 billion) at your disposal. But in the past two years Oprah Winfrey found out first-hand what it’s like to be the underdog staring failure in the eye – and it was an experience that shocked her to the core and left her on the brink of a nervous breakdown.

The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), the American cable channel she launched in 2011 after cancelling her 25-year-old talk show, floundered and by last year critics were predicting the most powerful woman in entertainment might be forced to pull the plug on her new baby.
