Under South African law, inmates can apply, in exceptional cases, to be accompanied to important family occasions such as funerals.

The Pistorius family was left devastated after the death of beloved grandma Gerti Pistorius (92) early on Sunday morning.

Ouma Gerti was the mother of Henke, Oscar’s father, and his uncles Arnold, Theo and Leo.

The memorial service was held at around 9 am at Kleine Kaap in Pretoria. Another funeral will be held for Gerti, the details of which have yet to be finalised.

“It is a private service,” said Johan van Wyk, a representative for the family. He said the service would be attended by family and friends.

He confirmed that Oscar, who is currently serving a six-year sentence behind bars for the 2014 killing of Reeva Steenkamp, has applied to be allowed to attend.

South African legislation permits prisoners to apply, in exceptional cases, for the Department of Correctional Services to accompany them to important family occasions such as funerals.

Gerti was, along with her husband Henrik (99), a resident at the Kronendal retirement village in Pretoria. During the past week her family have been sharing photographs and memories of their grandma. “My beautiful & elegant Oumi has passed away,” wrote Oscar’s sister Aimee on Twitter earlier this week. “I will love and cherish the moments & memories we've shared,” she tweeted.

Oscar brother, Carl, also paid tribute to the grandma by changing his Facebook profile picture to one of him and her together.

He also changed his Facebook cover photo, which runs at the top of his profile, to a picture of Aimee and Ouma Gertie.

Johan is married to Arnold’s daughter, Eunice. She also posted a moving tribute to her grandmother on Facebook on Sunday. “93 years old, married for 74 years, 7 children, 26 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren. With spouses she has 90 direct descendants.

"She had a special bond with every single one of them. She was an amazing woman. I am grateful for the mother she was for my father and the Oumi she was to me. She had a full life. She will be missed. At least we know we’ll see her again xx” On 3 September Aimee wished her Oumi happy birthday on Twitter and shared beautiful pictures of her.

Gerti was admitted to the Little Company of Mary in Pretoria on Saturday. She died on Sunday morning at around 05:20, reports News24.

Johan said that as yet the details of the funeral have not yet been finalised. Netwerk24 reported that many of Gerti’s grandchildren live overseas and would love to attend her funeral.

According to Johan it is not yet clear whether or not Oscar will attend the funeral.
