A paraplegic porcupine has been fitted with a pair of wheels.

The animal was unable walk after becoming paralysed from the waist down, but rather than put it down, an employee at the Piracicaba Municipal Zoo in Sao Paulo, Brazil came up with the ingenious solution.

Environmental police originally thought the spiky creature had lost its ability to walk after falling from a roof, but zoo director Marianna Cury believes it took a stick in the back.

Speaking about the fitting of the wheels, zoo worker Paula Cendrowicz de Sousa explained: "We have two veterinary medicine interns and one of them had seen a chair for dogs made of the same material on YouTube."
