Lindsay Miller was determined to wear her colander on her head when she recently had to renew her driver’s licence. Her reason? The Massachusetts woman calls herself a ‘pastafarian’ -- a member of the church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Lindsay says wearing the spaghetti strainer allows her to express her beliefs, just like other religions are allowed to do.

The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster might sound like a funny kids' novel, but it actually exists.

The church is reportedly a social movement promoting a lighthearted approach to faith and is against the teaching of creation and intelligent design in public schools.

According to their website, Pastafarianism has existed “in secrecy for hundreds of years,” but “came into the mainstream just a few years ago.”

"Some claim that the church is purely a thought experiment or satire illustrating that Intelligent Design is not science, just a pseudoscience manufactured by Christians to push Creationism into public schools," the site explains.

"These people are mistaken — The Church of FSM is legit, and backed by hard science. Anything that comes across as humor or satire is purely coincidental."

It’s really easy to join the church. You have to take part in some kind of ceremony (regardless of what it is), pay any kind fee (it doesn't matter who you pay it to) , make any affirmation, give up your present faith, know something about pastafarianism and believe in the church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

It’s not clear exactly how Lindsay became a member of the church but her request to wear her colander in her driver’s licence photograph was eventually granted – because of her religion.

We can’t help wondering if she removes her colander when she’s preparing vegetables.
