5FM DJ Poppy's cousin was murdered by her boyfriend.

Poppy Ntshongwana has posted a tribute to her late cousin Lithemba Jama on her Instagram page. Lithemba was stabbed to death by her boyfriend in her University of the Western Cape residence, according to Poppy.

'We should be the ones standing up for the Lithembas and Reevas'

Today would have been her cousin's 31st birthday. Our hearts go out to Poppy and her family.

Here is the message she posted on her page:

"Six years ago my cousin Lithemba Jama was stabbed to death at her UWC res by her boyfriend Kofi Danso. My Mom was called to the scene and had to see her body covered in multiple stab wounds and blood. My cousin and her friends had been celebrating her birthday and an argument had apparently broken out between her and her boyfriend and he stabbed and killed her. What's scary and is probably the norm for a lot of people in these situations, is that abusive situations are covered up. My cousin's 'friends' apparently knew she was in an abusive relationship, but no one could or wanted to do anything about it. And while I don't blame them for her death, it makes me wonder about the number of people that die because people were too afraid to speak up for others, especially in abusive situations. My cousin was probably one of the happiest people I knew, it boggles my mind to think that she couldn't or didn't ask for help. But it's the nature of abuse. It leaves you doubting so many things, including who you are and when to ask for help. My heart breaks for every single woman and person for that matter that has ever been abused and felt they couldn't ask for help. But I worry more for the people around them. The people that choose to turn a blind eye when this stuff is happening. We have voices. We are in a less vulnerable situation and we should be the ones standing up for the Lithemba's and Reeva's. Because if someone is willing to abuse you or disrespect you in front of other people, best believe they're capable of killing you. Everyone must know that. People don't have to die for us to take notice and to do something about their abusive situations. Lithemba on her 31st birthday. I miss and love you, Cuz!" (sic)
