As the world mourns the loss of Nelson Mandela, US President Barack Obama has paid tribute to Madiba.

In a live press conference from the White House in Washington, Obama said, "he achieved more than can be expected of any man. Today he has gone home."

It was announced last night that Madiba had passed away at 8:50pm. Tributes poured in from around the world and many world leaders are expected to arrive in South Africa in the next few days.

Obama says he drew inspiration from Mandela and his first act of politics was to demonstrate against apartheid.
