A pair of tigers has been temporarily moved to the Johannesburg Zoo because of construction on enclosures at the National Zoological Gardens of SA (NZG) in Pretoria.

"White tiger, Winston, and his mate, Leia... will be housed [in the Joburg Zoo] for the next six to nine months," said NZG spokeswoman Angeline Schwan in a statement on Monday. "Visitors need not worry about not seeing tigers. The NZG's third tiger, Lolo, will still be on display to the public," she said.

The tiger and lion enclosures were being revamped this month.

The lions would be moved to the Lion Park later in April or early in May.

Schwan said the revamp included replacing fences, enlarging the water pool, and expanding and modernising the animals' night quarters.

The enclosures for the big cats were built in the 1960s.
