Britain's Duke of Cambridge lacked enthusiasm as he arrived in Cambridge with an overnight bag.

The 31-year-old royal had a glum expression on his face as he arrived at the station yesterday for what is believed to be the first night away from his wife Duchess Catherine and their six-month-old son Prince George since he started university earlier this month.

Prince William had been commuting from London every day by train for the first three weeks of his agricultural management course, but could be set to spend this week separated from his family.

William started the 10-week course on January 7 and will endure 20 hours of teaching each week, where he will sit and interact with ordinary students in other classes.

However, the prince has been heavily criticised recently after it emerged that he had reportedly received a discount on his university fees. Student leaders have hit out at the low-cost deal as undergraduates are slapped with £9 000 annual tuition fees and leave university swamped with an average of £25 000 debt.

NUS vice president Dom Anderson said previously: "It's not as though the Queen has had to remortgage Buckingham Palace to help him through university.

"There are surely more deserving postgraduate students in Cambridge than the heir to the British throne who will inherit a £400million estate. Many feel the Royal Family receives quite enough of a subsidy as it is."
