Princess Diana wanted a daughter with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, whom she was "madly in love" with, it’s been claimed.

Princess Diana wanted a daughter with Hasnat Khan, her close friend Jemima Khan has claimed.

The 39-year-old writer says the late Princess of Wales ? who has two sons, Prince William (31) and Harry (28), with ex-husband Prince Charles ? told her and two other friends she was "madly in love" with the Pakistani heart surgeon and wanted children with him.

Diana ? who died in a car crash in 1997 along with her boyfriend, Dodi Al Fayed ? was also said to be planning to move to Hasnat's native homeland, which she’d visited at least twice on charity missions and where she secretly met with his family to discuss the possibility of marriage.

Jemima told Vanity Fair magazine, "Diana was madly in love with Hasnat Khan and wanted to marry him. Even if that meant living in Pakistan, and that's one of the reasons why we became friends.

"She also went to meet his family secretly to discuss the possibility of marriage to Hasnat. She wanted to know how hard it had been for me to adapt to life in Pakistan."

Following Jemima's comments, former Buckingham Palace chef Darren McGrady told Us Weekly, "This is all true. I was there when she was considering it."

Hasnat was concerned about her plans and could only contemplate a life together if she moved to Pakistan as he believed they could avoid media attention there.

In a police interview following her death in 1997, he said, "I thought it was a ridiculous idea . . . [I] told her that the only way I could see us having a vaguely normal life together would be if we went to Pakistan, as the press don't bother you there."

The pair eventually split and Diana started dating Dodi, and the late princess' confidante Rosa Monckton claims her relationship with the billionaire playboy "was designed to make Hasnat jealous".
