It wasn’t just R360 000 but R560 000 that was stolen from Esmaré Weideman’s bank account by means of cellphone and internet fraud. Esmaré, former editor-in-chief of YOU and chief executive officer of Media24, was given this shocking news by Adrian Vermooten, head of Absa’s digital channels.

Esmaré tweeted the following this morning, “Absa recently confirmed that ‘only’ R77 000 of the R560 000 stolen from my account is still missing. The investigation continues.”

This afternoon Esmaré confirmed she had no further details. “The first R200 000 has apparently already been paid into my home loan account. Adrian informed me today most of the money had been found but R77 000 is still missing.” An investigating official will copy her hard drive tomorrow to help with the investigation.

Tomorrow in YOU: The stories of others who have been robbed in this way, how the fraud works and what you can do to protect yourself from it.
