The rain expected to pour down in Mthatha for the rest of the week is a blessing, an African culture expert tells YOU journalist Asa Sokopo

The heavens will open all week in Mthatha – which is a blessing, according Dr Nokuzola Mndende of the Icamagu Institute, which promotes knowledge on African culture.

“Icamagu livumile (the spirits agree),” she says, explaining in African culture, when it rains just before an important event, it is a positive omen.

It will rain all week ahead of Madiba’s funeral in Qunu on Sunday.

Temperatures will be cool during this period. No rain is expected for Sunday but conditions will remain partly cloudy becoming sunny in the afternoon.

Mndende, a former lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Cape Town, said because ancestors are in the spirit form, we need to see something practical to show that they are in agreement.

For example, a goat must bleat during a traditional ceremony to show that ancestors agree. And in the event that a swarm of bees comes into a house, that must be taken as a sign of good news to come.

“Rain means luck and is a blessing, it is the ancestors’ way of giving us a non-verbal message. It is a blessing in many ways and is just one of the ways the ancestors show their blessings.

Indlela yakhe utata intle (his path to the next life is good).”
