After his mug shot went viral last year, former prisoner Jeremy Meeks, aka "Hot Felon", has now landed a modelling career.

His mug shot went viral last year, earning him the moniker of “Hot Felon”. Now convicted felon Jeremy Meeks (30) is once again a free man, and his criminally good looks have landed him a lucrative modelling career – in spite of a criminal record for gun possession and gang-related violence.

In 2015, after his mug shot was posted on the Stockton, California police department’s website, women – and men – swooned at the blue-eyed convict’s chiselled features and smouldering looks. The picture soon amassed more than 100 000 likes on Facebook alone – turning the father-of-two into an overnight global sensation, and attracting the attention of modelling bosses who signed him on the spot, albeit in prison.

Yet despite doing time for his crimes, some admirers still insist the only crime this felon was guilty of was “stealing your heart.” Following an early release from prison earlier this week, Jeremy took to social media to express his gratitude to friends and fans alike.

"I want to thank my family and everybody for all your love, support and prayers," he captioned a photo of himself and new manager Jim Jordan of White Cross Management on social media. "I'm overwhelmed and grateful for what lies ahead. I'm ready." Before he entered prison, Jeremy’s manager told media that his client had potential endorsement deals with "modelling agencies around the world," as well as "reality-show interests," but wouldn’t elaborate on much more. He added that he’d signed the criminal to his agency because "everybody deserves a second chance".

Jim added: "When I first saw Jeremy's picture, the first thing that came to my mind was, 'I needed to help this guy. After speaking with his wife and meeting his family, I got a real sense of who Jeremy was as a husband and father, not to mention how beautiful he is inside and out.”

He also claimed that his phone has been ringing off the hook with offers from the world’s “top five designers,” as well as TV producers, though he declined to say which ones. In preparation for his close-ups, Jeremy had been doing 500 sit-ups and 500 push-ups in his cell every day. "I’m in a place where I will be able to provide for my family and really change my life,” he told a TV news crew from prison last year. “I never thought that everyone in the world would recognize me for my looks, so I feel extremely blessed and very thankful.” During his time in prison, Jeremy received hundreds of letters from fans every month – mostly from women proclaiming their love for him. But he’s not interested in the attention – he’s been married for ten years to his high school sweetheart, Melissa Meeks, and the couple have two children.

Yet despite his legion of fans, Jeremy isn’t Mr Popular with California police. In the last 10 years, he’s been arrested for theft, fraud and forgery, with Stockton Police Department calling him "one of the most violent criminals in the area." That hasn’t stopped the fans from supporting him, though. Some have been quick to respond to Jeremy's first picture on Instagram as a free man.

One wrote: "He is free girl!!! Hmm my Goodness!" Another labelled him as "free and fine!"

But not everyone's impressed. Victoria Pannell said: "I hope you do not get any acting jobs over men and women that have trained and studied their craft. I wish you success but not over people who truly deserve to be in front of the camera because of their hard work and not because of a decent looking mug shot." And Coco King said: "So many thirsty females willing to take anything that looks good. Obviously he's not good. This man is a criminal and nothing more.”
