Rosie O’Donnell has spoken for the first time since splitting from her wife Michelle Rounds.

The talk show host and comedienne is taking some time to herself in the wake of the painful separation as she and Michelle work out if their union can be saved.

After almost three years of marriage and with five children between them to take into consideration, the couple aren’t yet ready to file divorce papers.

'I think what we both want is for each other to be happy'

"I'm doing everything that I can to take care myself, and I think Michelle is doing the same thing,” the 52-year-old told Dr Oz during an interview that will air in the States on Friday.

"I think what we both want is for each other to be happy and live the most complete and full life we can. We're going to figure out whether or not that's together or separate. Right now we're living separately and we're figuring out how that feels and trying to deal with all the emotions that come with that. And, also having five children."

The couple announced their split in a statement released last Friday. However, they are reported to have actually separated back in November.

Thursday also marked Rosie’s final appearance on talk show The View, with the star stepping down as co-host to focus on her children during this difficult time. The former couple are parents to daughter Dakota, whom they adopted as a baby in 2013, while Rosie also has four older children.

She told the audience that she and the kids are headed off on a relaxing vacation.

In a video posted to YouTube, the star, who suffered a heart attack in August 2012, explained that part of leaving the show was in order to reduce the amount of stress in her life.

“Stress is very bad for heart attack survivors. You should minimise your stress, maximise your exercise and control your diet,” she explained. “That's what you need to do for a healthy heart. So that's what I'm doing. I'm minimising my stress by leaving The View.”
