Russell Brand has slammed the Queen's Speech and thinks Britain should "get shot" of the Royal Family.

The comedian and actor was unimpressed by the annual speech, which saw the monarch sit on the Throne at the House of Lords this week to outline the Government's agenda, because he thinks the pomp and ceremony is undeserved and unnecessary.

Speaking on his online video blog The Trews, he said: "When they're doing these speeches about austerity, don't you ever sort of think, 'Ain't you in a great big gold f***ing house? How poor are you?'"

Holding the front page of a newspaper with a photograph of the queen on the Throne, he said: "That is mad innit? That shouldn't be happening anymore, we're a sophisticated species now, we've evolved beyond that.

"We don't need people in great big gold houses covered in medals for stuff they can't possibly have done. I mean, what would warrant that?"

The 39-year-old star went on to joke about the ceremony at the State Opening of Parliament and how not even movie stars get the same treatment in films.

He said: "If it was a film and some sort of space admiral, you'd think, 'Oh, he must have killed an alien nation or something like that'. Hans Solo at the end of 'Stars Wars' didn't get that."

Russell added: "I don't think there's any point in having a royal family anymore, we should just get shot of them."
