14-year-old panda Mei Xiang gave birth to her first cub after five failed attempts at artificial insemination.

Panda-watchers were delighted when the Smithsonian National Park in Washington DC announced its 14-year-old panda Mei Xiang gave birth to her first cub since 2005 after five failed attempts at artificial insemination, the Washington Post reported.

Zoo officials were worried that the panda had become infertile and considered replacing her and her partner Tian Tian with another pair.

But keepers were overjoyed when they heard the unmistakable screech of a new-born panda cub while watching the zoo’s 24-hour-a-day panda camera on Sunday.

Zoo officials will monitor the cub closely to make sure it is not in danger.
