She’s certainly not your average teen – besides being a black belt in karate, being comfortable shooting guns and bows, and enjoying riding dirt bikes, 15-year-old Hayley Hall enjoys swallowing swords.

She’s certainly not your average teen – besides being a black belt in karate, being comfortable shooting guns and bows, and enjoying riding dirt bikes, 15-year-old Hayley Hall enjoys swallowing swords.

Hailing from Georgia in the United States, Hayley is recognised by Sword Swallowers Association International as its youngest female member.

She began to practise with a wire hanger and a spoon, learning to relax her gag reflex, the Huffington Post reports.

Sword swallowing can take between two to six years to master, but Hayley seems to have the knack of it. According to sword swallower Vanessa Neil, the practice dates back 4 000 years to India.

In a video Hayley explains she learned to “slurp steel” at the age of 14. The length of her sword measures 17 inches, which is just more than 43 cm.

She says she has never had any major injuries and is very careful. “You could sever the oesophagus or puncture the bottom of your stomach,” she says.

Hayley’s parents are very supportive of her, and as she has always wanted to be an actress, her parents see it as combining her love of physical challenges with her passion for the theatre.

World Sword Swallower’s Day in on 23 February.
