She was the miracle baby that united people from all over the country in support of her fight for life. But last night, the baby girl born at just 25 weeks at Clinton Hospital in Alberton lost her battle for breath.

The story of baby Hayley Meyer from Alberton in Gauteng made headlines across the country after she was born on April 4 weighing just 650 grams -- only slightly more than a block of butter. Her condition quickly deteriorated and she lost 100 g in the week after her birth.

But when YOU spoke to her father Pieter Meyer (21) on 15 April, he said her condition was improving. "She's a real fighter," he said. "We're relying on God. It's the only way we're going to get through this."

In his most recent post, Peter thanked the public on behalf of his wife for their support and prayers. In his most recent post, Peter thanked the public on behalf of his wife for their support and prayers.

Pieter and his wife Nicole (21) set up a Facebook group A Test of Faith to keep friends and family updated about Hayley's progress. But their baby girl's fight tugged on heartstrings all over South Africa and soon the group had almost 10 000 followers.

"I am so sorry to inform all of you but tonight on 18/04/2016 around 10:00PM my little princess past away... her body was taking on a lot of pressure and God came to take her home... me as a first time daddy. I am broken. "

"You are an angel now," Pieter wrote of his daughter. "You are an angel now," Pieter wrote of his daughter.

"She was a true MIRACLE," the devastated father wrote.

"She was the true HOPE and a big INSPIRATION. She was to most people only a small baby but to me she was my hero."

"Daddy loves you my princess and till I see you again I've got the PERFECT daddy to look after you.

"Be still now my girl you don't have tears where you are, you are an ANGEL now."
