At the age of just 18 she had nearly a million followers on popular photo-sharing site Instagram and girls worldwide envied her slim body, designer clothes, tanned skin and carefree lifestyle.

But now Essena O’Neill, from Queensland in Australia, has decided to reveal the truth about her “glamorous” lifestyle. She’s added new captions to her string of bikini shots and other postings so envied by her followers, revealing the truth behind the pictures.

'Without realising, I’ve spent the majority of my teenage life being addicted to social media'

Essena has since erased her social media pages, apparently because they promote unattainable beauty standard and put young girls under pressure to try to look like their “fake” heroes.

But her announcement has come at a price – in a teary video clip Essena says she’s nearly broke because all her sponsors have dropped her and that she’s no longer earning an income promoting brands on Instagram.

“Without realising, I’ve spent the majority of my teenage life being addicted to social media, social approval, social status and my physical appearance,” she wrote. “Social media, especially how I used it, isn’t real.”
