A woman who’s about to testify in her divorce proceedings is being sworn in by the clerk of the court.

“Do you solemnly swear the evidence you’re about to give in this court will be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?” he says. “Please put up your right hand and say, ‘So help me God’.”

“I do,” the woman says.

“You don’t understand; you must say, ‘So help me God’,” the clerk insists.

“I do,” the woman repeats.

This exchange is repeated.

The judge has had enough. “Madam,” he says, “when you get married you say ‘I do’. When you get divorced you say ‘So help me God’.”
