Spud 2: Getting to know . . . Blessing Xaba

Ahead of Spud 2: The Madness Continues opening at cinemas countrywide on Friday 21 June, we have a chat to Blessing Xaba (Fatty).

Blessing pays lovable glutton Fatty, who brings glory to the Crazy 8 with his unique talent – eating.

What can Spud fans look forward to in The Madness Continues?

The crazy 8 are slightly older in the second film; they are smarter, stronger, more daring, and ever ready to strike at anybody that threatens their title! I also think the sequel carries more substance for the other characters, so you get to know everybody a little better.

What was your favourite scene to shoot?

Although I would never admit it at the time, I LOVED shooting the hotdog eating competition sequences. Lots of disgusting face stuffing, a food fight, and working with Rob Van Vuuren- who plays the announcer at all the competitions- a combination for mayhem! And we like mayhem.

What is your favourite thing about your character?

I love that Fatty is the ultimate Trooper. Always game to go along with Rambo’s schemes, all for the good of the colony. He’ll always take one for the team; being the “G” he is, without so much as a grumble.

Do you have a lot in common with your character?

Yes, I would say Fatty and Blessing do have quite a bit in common. The way we think is our closest similarity, although the manifestations may differ… I would never take as many risks simply in the name of fun.

What was the funniest moment on set?

This is the set of Spud we’re talking about! There were hilarious moments all day every day! One that stands out though: the day we filmed ‘house-play auditions’, all the crazy eight trying to play animals, and after all the scripted animals were shot, our director, Don, gave us licence to attempt a few impromptu animals, everything from sea-horses to hadedahs…

Who in the cast did you get along with the best?

We’re all so close… but, Troye!

Who was the troublemaker on set?

I was a proper handful myself… haha. But, even I fall in second place, compared to Mad Dog – Josh.

Were there any off-screen romances between cast members?

Off screen romances hey?... none that I was ever made aware of.

Of all the members of the cast, who do you think would make the best couple?

Well, Troye and Genna (spud and mermaid) do look kinda cute together, don’t they?

What’s in the pipeline for you this year?

I am waiting to hear if I’ve been cast in another stage production, but it’s too soon to tell at this point. So if anybody’s looking… haha.
