Leonardo DiCaprio was among celebrities marching to raise awareness about global climate change in New York Sunday.

The actor and environmental activist, recently honoured for his philanthropy by the United Nations, was joined by the likes of Evangeline Lilly, Mark Ruffalo and Edward Norton for the People’s Climate March in midtown Manhattan, according to Variety.

Evangeline posted a photo of herself on Instagram during the event, surrounded by hundreds of supporters as she smiled and waved at the camera from a crowded city street.

“#peoplesclimate #lovetheearth #peace,” she captioned the clip.

More than 100 000 were expected to attend the march, according to organisers, with the goal of telling “the story of today’s climate movement in all its parts”.

The rally was held two days prior to the United Nations summit in Manhattan, during which world leaders will gather to discuss environmental issues.

It also came a day after Leonardo was honoured in New York City by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who named him the new UN Messenger of Peace.

“I feel a moral obligation to speak out at this key moment in human history – it is a moment for action,” the actor said in a previous statement.

“How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet.”
