A Brazilian student has died after downing 25 shots of vodka in 60 seconds.

Humberto Moura Fonseca was playing a drinking game at a party at the Julio de Mesquita university in the city of Bauru, in southwest Brazil. The 23-year-old was tasked with trying to knock back 25 shots in less than a minute.

Afterwards Humberto reportedly told friends he felt sick, and suddenly collapsed.

He died on the way to a nearby hospital.

"On his Facebook there’s a quote, a motto, from the Russian poet Vladimir Maiakovski which says ‘It is better to die from vodka than from boredom’," Humberto's friend Rodrigo Pancetti said

"I never thought that would become reality."

Six other students who attempted to down the 25 shots of vodka also collapsed with alcohol poisoning. Three now being treated in intensive care.

“They all had alcohol poisoning and are in a critical state, with three still in intensive care,” a hospital spokesman said.

It’s believed police may lay charges.

“Two fourth year students at the university have been arrested for organising the event without a licence and for potentially causing the death of the student,” they said in a statement.
