M-Net has announced a new local version of reality show Survivor – with an interesting twist.

The teams of Survivor South Africa: Champions will be led by sporting heroes Mark Fish and Corné Krige.

Having teams led by two sports stars is a worldwide first for the reality series. Unlike the other contestants, who’ll be unknown SA citizens, soccer star Mark and former Springbok rugby captain Corné won’t run the risk of being voted off at the show’s dreaded tribal councils.

The sports stars will be competing for R500 000 for themselves, separate from the traditional Survivor winnings and title, which one of the other contestants will win. Viewers will have the opportunity to choose between Mark and Corné for the separate prize.

"This addition to the popular reality-show format is bound to create many hours of exciting water-cooler conversation,” says Pierre Cloete, M-Net director: general entertainment channels. “Mark and Corné are both highly competitive and physically strong, but have very different personalities. It will be fascinating to see how these tribe captains strategise to get their team ahead and how they deal with the multiple challenges on the island."

South African citizens who want to join either Corné or Mark's tribes, should keep an eye on M-Net, the M-Net website and the press from the beginning of July to find out more. As in the past, contestants will have to be older than 18, with a valid passport and the determination to remain standing in the harshest of circumstances.

Mark is hoping his team will “showcase their individual qualities that will help the team to progress”, while Corné is looking for teammates with “fighting spirits”.

“I feel for Corné’s tribe,” says Mark, “To be led by a rugby player? Say no more!"

Survivor South Africa: Champions will be shot at a secret location towards the end of this year. Nico Panagio will again be the show’s host.
