Waterkloof Estate’s delicious Healey’s Slow Matured Cheddar got the international nod when they walked away with second place in the biennial 2014 World Championship Cheese Contest held in the USA recently. And now you can tuck into this award-winning cheese as it’s stocked at Checkers!

The Healey’s Farmhouse Cheddar team did exceptionally well in making sure their cheese stood out from the rest. The cheddar was selected out of 3 000 international entries and then out of 22 South African cheeses by the competition’s judges.

“We were so ecstatic when we found out that we had come second. We tasted a few batches of cheese, until we finally decided to enter that specific cheese,” says general manager of Healey’s Farmhouse Cheddar, Jannik Le Roux. They entered their round bandaged, raw-milk cheddar in the Round Cheddar Category.

Healey’s Farmhouse Cheddar head cheese maker Desiree Stuart oversaw the process of making the world-class Slow Matured Cheddar cheese. The team from Somerset West, along with the other 21 entries from South Africa had their vacuum-packed cheeses flown to the USA, while they stayed behind.

For a taste of the award-winning cheese, you can have samples of a selection of Healey’s Slow Matured Cheddar at Waterkloof Estate, on the outskirts of Somerset West for R40 (per person) or simply head on over to Checkers.
