Taylor Swift twerks in a tutu in her new music video

Only pop princess Taylor Swift could pull this off. In her latest offering, Taylor Swift swaps her acoustic guitar and cowboy boots for a tutu and a series of other weird '80s-esque costumes.

Yesterday, 24-year-old Taylor released a new single and video for a track called Shake it Off. The toe-tapping tune is the first off her '80s-influenced pop album, 1989, she announced during a Yahoo live stream.

'The album is a bit of a rebirth for me'

Taylor says the shift was inspired by her love of the decade. "I loved how bold it was, how ahead of its time it was" she explained. "It was, apparently, a time of limitless potential. The idea of endless possibility was kind of a theme in the last year of my life.... The album is a bit of a rebirth for me."

True to her usual style though, the song itself was penned about experiences from Taylor's own life. Except this time, Taylor takes a swipe at her "haters", rather than an unfortunate ex boyfriend.

Shake it Off is about "the idea that people can say whatever they want about us at any time, and we cannot control that," Taylor said.

The album will hit shelves (or, er, iTunes) on October 27.
