A teenager has been hailed as a hero after she lifted a burning pickup truck to save her father's life.

Charlotte Heffelmire, from Virginia, found her father Eric pinned under the vehicle in the garage at their home.

He had been working on it when its jack slipped, trapping Eric.

This also led to an oil spill, which set the truck and the garage on fire.

"The minute the jack slipped, there was an almost instantaneous, real strong smell of gasoline, and then just, whoosh!" Eric told NBC Washington.

About ten minutes later, Charlotte ran in the garage barefoot. Using superhuman strength, she managed to free her trapped dad.

"I kind of came into the garage and the garage was already on fire and really from there I kind of snapped into that whatever super mode I had at that point and kind of do what I had to do," said Charlotte, who is a US Air Force Academy student.

With Eric's guidance, she managed to lift the pickup truck.

"I felt the weight shift, and I said, “You almost got it,” and then it was just UGHHHHHHRRR, and suddenly I’m pulled out," said Eric.

Afterwards, Charlotte called 911 while putting out the fire with a hose.

"Once the truck was moved, Charlotte closed the garage doors to help contain the fire, then went into the house and got everybody out, including her sister’s baby," said the The Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department.

The local fire department has since awarded Charlotte with a Citizen Lifesaving Award last week for her heroic act.

Eric is proud of his brave daughter.

"Yeah, I thought they would be pulling out a dead body later in the evening."
