A teenager has been treated for acute hepatitis and liver damage after the green tea she bought online caused her skin to turn yellow.

The unidentified girl from Yemen reportedly bought 200 bags of the tea online, drinking 2-3 cups a day for a few months. “I had bought the green tea over the internet to lose weight,” she told BMJ Journal.

“I had only lost a couple of pounds but then started having horrible pains in my joints, and felt very dizzy and sick.”

Initially, the doctor thought she had a urinary tract infection (UTI), sending her home with antibiotics.

Instead of getting better, her symptoms worsened. She soon developed jaundice, a condition that caused her skin and the whites of her eyes to turn yellow.

Upon further investigation, doctors identified the green tea as the culprit.

After she stopped drinking it, “there was a rapid and sustained recovery of her hepatitis”.

“Now I look back it was definitely due to the tea, I never took anything else and it all started happening after drinking the tea. I will never buy any online tea again or any weight loss pills.
