John Berry (72) suffered from multiple melanoma cancer for more than a year.

Tereza Troskie -Herbst (48) is at peace after the passing of her father, John Berry (72) early Friday morning, even though she’s still carrying a great deal of pain.

John, who suffered from multiple melanoma cancer for more than a year, was admitted to a hospital in Somerset West when he died at 06:20 am.

“It’s a rare type of cancer that attacks and eats at the bones,” a heartbroken Tereza said.

Her father had terrible pain in his lower back and a while before his death suffered from pneumonia that just wouldn’t heal.

According to Tereza, this caused her father difficulty in breathing, for which doctors prescribed a very strong antibiotic.

Nonetheless, his sudden death came as a shock to the family.

“A year ago we had hoped he’d live another five to 10 years,” she shared. However, John’s treatment was stopped after doctors found there was nothing they could do for him.

Scans showed black spots on her father’s body, even ‘till his brain’, Tereza explained.

She said her mother, Joey (70) is still grieving the loss of her husband, but she too has made peace with his passing.

Ilana Herbst, Tereza’s sister-in-law, sent her a touching message this morning: “Nou sit Jayden op oupa se skoot in die hemel.” (Jayden can now take a seat on his grandad’s lap in heaven.)

Jayden is Tereza and husband Bennie’s baby, who died six days after birth.

The former Mrs South Africa said she’ll always remember her father as the peaceful mediator; the one that was ‘always calm amidst stormy weather’. She said his family was important to him and he loved her and Boet Troksie’s son, Jamie, dearly.

“I can’t remember him ever speaking to or treating my mother harshly. He was an example of how you should treat your fellow human.”
