A dog is man’s best friend – this old adage proved true when a dog ran away from home to visit its owner in hospital.

Sissy, a miniature Schnauzer, left her Iowa home to visit Nancy Franck (64) who was hospitalised following surgery. The dog knew exactly where to go despite never been to the hospital before. Perhaps out of instinct, the small dog walked 15 blocks to where her beloved owner was.

'She was on a mission that night to see her mom'

“She was on a mission that night to see her mom," Dale Franck, Nancy’s husband, told ABC News, "but she couldn't find the right elevator to take."

Sissy was caught on the hospital’s surveillance camera wondering around the lobby. After a collar check determined her address, the security officer called Dale.

He had become worried when he noticed the dog missing.

"I kept checking everywhere, calling out, 'Sissy! Sissy!'" he recalled. "I was pulling my hair out."

When his daughter went to collect Sissy at the hospital, they were allowed to visit Nancy for a while, boosting Nancy’s spirits. “That was great just being able to see her. That was perfect. I’m glad she thought of it.”
