The oke called Parow

He’s the notorious bad boy of Afrikaans music. He raps until the spittle flies, swears like a trooper and doesn’t give a damn what anyone thinks about it.

Jack Parow is his name and when you ask him what his music is about he sarcastically says what he does is Afrikaans romantic rap.

He’s the cooler-than-cool guy who was born 28 years ago in Bellville as Zander Tyler.

But those who know him well say the man who calls a spade a f****** shovel and whose lyrics would make a sailor blush is a pussycat at heart. Conflict and fighting aren’t this Wellington brandy drinker’s style.

That’s why even some “old aunties” find him cool these days, he says from a caravan on the roof of The Grand Daddy Hotel in Cape Town.

Things are going well locally and some music bigwigs in Holland were so impressed with what they saw of him on the internet that Jack has landed a record contract with Top Notch recording company there.

The negotiations took three months, he says. “My life’s a bit of a madhouse these days.”

He simply shrugs when asked about his fame. “I rap because I enjoy it and there’s nothing else I want to do.”

The world is taking notice. His Cooler as Ekke video has had more than 750 000 hits on YouTube and he seems to be constantly stopping to greet a fan or give someone his autograph.

Meanwhile he’s working hard on songs with overseas artists such as American rappers Canibus and DZK, Jack says. “I’ve already sent them a beat.”

His debut album, Jack Parow, is climbing steadily up the charts, with more than 30 000 copies sold since May and he’s on tour in Holland and preparing to tour Australia and the UK.

He started listening to rap when he was 12 and the first CD he bought was Snoop Doggy Dogg’s Doggy Style, he says. He lives near the suburb of Durbanville and his mom, Ronel, manages a décor shop. His father, Edwin, is deceased. His older sisters, Tasha and Tanya, are always supportive of their famous brother even though neither is involved in the music business.

After school Jack tried his hand at motor mechanics but didn’t feel it was for him. He wanted to be a rapper, like Snoop Dogg and others.

“I want to take over the world with my music.”

It appears that’s not as far-fetched as it sounds. He flew to Holland this week to tour.
