A new manager spends a week with the manager he’s taking over from.

On the last day the departing manager tells him, “I’ve left three numbered envelopes in your desk drawer.

Open an envelope if you encounter a crisis you can’t solve.”

Three months later everything is going wrong at the business and the new manager is at a loss as to what to do. Then he remembers the parting words of his predecessor and decides to open the first envelope.

Inside is a note that says,

“Blame your predecessor!”

He does this and gets off the hook with the owner of the business.

About a year later the company is experiencing a dip in sales, combined with serious production problems. The manager decides to open the second envelope.

Inside is a note that says,

“Reorganise!”

The manager does this and the company quickly rebounds.

Three months later there’s another crisis and the manager opens the third envelope.

The note inside says, “Prepare three envelopes!”
