Twelve inmates escaped from prison using peanut butter to confuse one of the guards to open their cell door.

The massive prison break happened at Walker County Jail in Alabama on Sunday, after one prisoner took advantage of a new guard who was working in the control room, The Mirror reports.

They used the peanut butter from their sandwiches to change the numbers on the prison doors, Sheriff James Underwood told press.

Then they called out to the guard to open 'their' cell door and supplied him with the wrong door number.

The guard, who was communicating with them via camera, believed them and opened the door which turned out to be the external door instead of their cell rooms.

And just like that, they walked out of prison.

"Changing numbers on doors with peanut butter - it may sound crazy, but these kinds of people are crazy like a fox," said Underwoood.

"He thought he was opening the cell door for this man to go in his cell, but in fact, he opened the outside door."

The prisoners managed to run to the perimeter and jump over the fence within minutes. Eleven of the 12 were found in a matter of hours after local police launched a large search operation.

The 12th inmate was only found and arrested on Tuesday morning. Nearby residents were warned to stay in their homes and report anything suspicious.
