Qhubeka is a local relief program dedicated to changing lives one bicycle at a time.

Meaning “to carry on”, “to progress”, “to move" in Nguni, the initiative "helps people move forward and progress by giving bicycles in return for work done to improve communities, the environment or academic results."

"Having a bicycle changes lives by increasing the distance people can travel, what they can carry, where they can go and how fast they can get there," states the initiative's website.

It is with this objective that the initiative's #BicyclesChangeLives campaign delivered 25 bicycles to Noordgesig Secondary School learners in Orlando, Soweto on Tuesday.

In partnership with Deloitte, City of Joburg and Regatommogo Sports Development and Life Skills, the bicycles were the the first of 1 700 that Deloitte plans on funding during 2016.

“We are very happy to be a part of this amazing campaign that is doing such important work,” says Thiru Pillay, the leader of Deloitte Consulting.

“We believe that our role is to enable high performance, and our contribution to #BicyclesChangeLives will help to empower these learners, who represent the future of South Africa.”

Learners are required to meet certain qualifying criteria to be able to receive a Qhubeka Buffalo Bicycle and recipients are chosen according to their need (such as their families’ financial situation or the distance they live from the school they attend).

Learners selected for the programme will be supported with bike safety and maintenance training, provided by Regatommogo Sports Development and Life Skills, a cycling organisation that aims to address cycling challenges within Soweto communities.

Part of the World Bicycle Relief, the local initiative seeks to raise funds for 5 000 bicycles in 2016. These bicycles will then be provided to adults and school children across South Africa, to improve people’s mobility and thereby access to education, healthcare and economic opportunity.

The 2015 campaign raised funds for 5 020 bicycles, which were distributed to school children in South Africa.
