The little boy behind the meme now known as ‘success kid’ is older and looking to raise money so his dad can get a kidney transplant.

You’ve probably seen the meme of the kid at the beach with his fist clenched tight and a determined expression on his face.

Now eight years old, Sammy Griner and his family recently launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to cover Justin Griner’s medical bills. He fell ill in 2006 before suffering total kidney failure in 2009. He has been on dialysis ever since and the family believes a transplant is the only way.

The family needed around $75 000 (R897 000) and has already surpassed that goal. In a week, the campaign has won pledges of more $90 000 (R1,08 million)!

Sammy’s mother, Laney Griner was initially hesitant about using her son's internet fame to raise money but realised it could be a good way to highlight the cause. "We're the parents of 'Success Kid' for goodness' sake," Laney told the Daily Dot. "If anyone understands the power, the mass, and goodwill of the internet, it's those of us lucky to experience it daily." The original photo that was turned into a meme was taken when Sammy was 11 months old. In that moment, Laney said Sammy was about to shove a fistful of sand in his mouth.
