Lisa Brown, an American former model, suffers from a rare disease that’s causing her to literally die of hunger.

The 32-year-old looks years older because of the rare superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) she suffers from.

The disease, with which she was diagnosed in 2013, makes it impossible for her to take in solid food without vomiting and experiencing severe pain.

'I’m terrified her condition will only get worse'

So far, there are only 400 known cases worldwide. One in three sufferers dies.

Today Lisa is a shadow of her former self. In two years she lost more than 20 kg.

“I used to be lively, sociable, healthy and happy,” she says. “Now I’m permanently in pain and depend on others most of the time.”

She says she seldom leaves her home because people stare at her.

“People come up to me and tell me I’m too thin, that I don’t look good.” Such words hurt her.

Her husband Patrick is worried about the fact that her health is deteriorating daily. Many doctors have tried to cure her digestive problem but none has been successful.

“I’m terrified her condition will only get worse,” Patrick says.

At present Lisa “eats” through a tube, taking in only liquids that provide the nutrients that keep her alive.

“Mornings are by best time; that’s when I’m in the least pain,” she says.

There’s nothing much medical science can do for her but Lisa remains hopeful. “I want to inform the public and the medical world about SMAS. Be my own activist.”
