"...they could not free the girl’s hand as her ring finger and pinky became stuck under the handrail."

A little girl suffered painful injuries on her hand after she snagged her fingers under an escalator handrail.

The child, aged two, was visiting a supermarket with her grandmother when the accident happened in the city of Guangzhou, capital of South China’s Guangdong Province. The careless grandmother did not appear to be paying attention to her young granddaughter when she and the tot stepped onto the top of the descending escalator.

The girl instinctively placed her left hand on the rubber handrail and her arm was dragged under the equipment until her fingers and thumb became jammed between the moving parts.Fortunately, the girl’s cries were heard by staff who stopped the machine by pressing the emergency button.

But they could not free the girl’s hand as her ring finger and pinky became stuck under the handrail.

The local fire service had to be called and spent the next 10 minutes unscrewing the nuts and bolts connecting the handrail and the escalator floor board. Finally, her hand was successfully freed and she was taken to hospital for treatment of her injuries.

She did not lose any fingers and is expected to make a full recovery, but the child’s grandmother is looking to claim compensation from the shopping centre for the accident.

However, it is unclear whether the authorities would hear her case, as the incident seems to have been caused by her own negligence, reports suggested.
