A toddler has lost his arm after it was bitten off by a tiger at Ya’an Bifeng Gorge animal park in China.

Reports suggest that the 2-year-old poked his arm inside the enclosure of a white Bengal tiger in an attempt to attract the animal’s attention.

In turn, the tiger bit down on the boy's arm, tearing away a huge chunk of muscle.

According to the Shanghaiist the toddler was immediately rushed to the People's Hospital in Yan'an for emergency treatment, before being transferred to another hospital for surgery.

Unfortunately, his entire arm could not be saved and had to be amputated from below the elbow.

The boy had been visiting the zoo with three adult family members.
