Carl Griffiths (22), a rugby player in the town of Trimsaram in southern Wales, is literally too big for his boots. Carl is just over two metres tall and his feet are 39 cm long. This makes his feet the biggest in Britain.

Carl’s problem is he can’t find size 21 rugby boots to play his favourite game in. He’s had to be satisfied with being a spectator.

'My feet have been big for as long as I can remember'

For the past three years Carl has played for his town’s rugby team in size 18 shoes that were made specially for him by a company in America. But his feet kept growing and before long he was binding his toes with black tape before each match and practise session and playing with curled-up toes.

He has had a few toes broken by players who accidentally trampled on his feet.

Carl’s size 18 shoes have worn out now and he needs new ones – size 21s that can accommodate his cramped toes but which are too expensive to have specially made and imported.

“My feet have been big for as long as I can remember,” Carl says.

“They grew so fast at school that my mom had to buy me shoes every few months. I went through two of three pairs of shoes a year.”

By the time Carl was 12 he was wearing size 14 shoes. Less than two years later he was wearing size 17.

Although Carl’s feet are a problem for him on the rugby field they count in his favour when it comes to girls. “Girls often approach me and ask, ‘Is it true what they say about men with big feet?’”

Carl’s dad, Wayne (39), wears a size 13 shoe and doesn’t know where his son got his big feet from.
