Treat yourself to tea

Tea comes in many different strengths and flavours, and can do wonders for your health. Go on, pour a cup!

Up and coming model Kendall Jenner recently revealed that she drank 12 cups of detox tea a day during the chaos of Fashion Week. While she reportedly favours a lemongrass and green tea blend, there are many other options. The drinks are packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and offer a healthy alternative to regular tea and coffee. They can also assist with everything from detoxifying your system to boosting your energy, as well as helping lower your risk of stroke, heart disease and your blood pressure. The drinks can help keep your weight down too, and they offer a gentler way of detoxing than sticking to a completely liquid diet.

There is no hard evidence to prove that the tea alone can purify a person's cells though. However, high quality versions can help support the body’s natural daily process of detoxification - just as other foods and drinks can hurt this system.

Green tea is the classic for boosting our natural cleansing process. The reason it has more health benefits than black tea is reportedly due to the way it's processed, with the system for black tea allowing for fermentation and green tea avoiding it. As a result, green tea retains maximum amounts of antioxidants and polyphenols - the substances that gives it its many benefits.

There are specific detoxing teas available in the shops, which do have added benefits. Herbs like lemongrass, ginger and dandelion all contain properties said to support a healthy liver, one of the organs in charge of your natural detoxifying process. Ginger has also been proven to alleviate oxidative stress within the liver, which indirectly helps the organ perform its cleaning task more efficiently.

Try incorporating more cups of detox or green tea into your diet to help your system, but don't undo the good work by eating the wrong things. Try and cut back on processed and fried foods, and up your intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and anti-inflammatory fats like avocados and almonds to really help the tea maximise its beneficial properties.
