Less than 24 hours after he was announced as the new host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah found himself in hot water when a horde Twitter users dubbed a few of his old tweets offensive.

Late last night, the local comedian (31) took to Twitter itself to respond to accusations. "To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn't land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian," he simple said.

Comedy Central also came to their new star's defence. “Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries," the channel said in a statement.

"He is provocative and spares no one, himself included,” the network said in its statement. It continued: “To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”
