Chris Bauer admits he overcame a 10-year battle with drugs and alcohol after his wife gave him an ultimatum, but he believes fame contributed to his addictions.

Chris Bauer believes fame is partly to blame for his ten-year battle with drugs and alcohol. The True Blood star, who has been sober for seven years, thinks the Hollywood scene contributed to his addiction because he was able to get his hands on drugs easily and freely.

'I went from being the life of the party to not being able to make it to the party'

Speaking to PEOPLE magazine, he said: "My business obviously collects all sorts of fringe and untraditional personalities. It was never hard, whether it was at a dinner party, a nightclub or a premiere, to find somebody to share their drugs with me.

"Alcoholism is extremely progressive. I went from being the life of the party to not being able to make it to the party. All my energy was going into covering how drunk I was, how hung over I was or how quickly I could get out of a situation so I could go have a drink."

The 47-year-old actor, who had his first alcoholic beverage at the age of 14, turned to booze to help him feel better about himself.

He explained: "I think I abused it from the beginning. The idea of taking one drink for me was on par with aliens and Bigfoot. It was always more than one. I drank to change how I felt inside, and that's basically a one-way ride to oblivion."

However, Chris was given a wake-up call when his wife of 17 years Laura - with whom he has children Beau, 14, and Mercy, 12 - gave him an ultimatum. He said: "She was really afraid for me ... She said she was going to take the kids and leave, that she couldn't stay in the situation until I changed things."    - Bang Showbiz
