This grandpa and his grandson have one tragic thing in common.

The surgery scars across both their chests.

An emotional moment between the Allen Halstead cuddling 11-month-old Kolbie Gregware, from Alabama in the US, was captured in a powerful black and white image by photographer Sunshine Moody.

“My dad has had two open heart surgeries, 18 stents, pacemaker, deflator, artery disease, diabetic, massive stroke, to many to count mini heart attacks and has 10% heart function,” Kolbie's mother, Brandy Gregware wrote on her Facebook page.

“His last admission was at the heart failure hospital in Atlanta [sic].”

The two share zip-like scars on their chests despite being generations apart.

“They were able to put him on medicine that helps his heart beat a little stronger," she says of Allen. “Once the medicine is no longer effective we will be saying our goodbyes,” Brandy added.

Little Kolbie had his first open heart surgery at just four months old after being born with heart defect.

The tot, who has a twin Kash, suffers from pulmonary vein stenosis, pulmonary hypertension, chronic lung disease, kidney disease and Down syndrome.

“He is 10 months old and has spent 7 of those months in the hospital! His last admission he was on life support for over 2 1/2 weeks because he had HMPV (a cold) [sic],”

“I was in tears when I saw this picture! I'm in tears as I type this. . . It shows 2 fighting miracles!” the mother-of-two wrote.

Brandy told MailOnline that life has been hard for her family. With Grandpa Allen and tiny Kolbie constantly in and out of hospital, the thought that they might not return has never left her mind.

She adds that she often sits and watches the two interact with each other and how they have little chats about their ‘zipper’ scars.

“You can definitely see the love and bond these two miracle fighters have in this picture!!”

“There is so much hate and violence in the world yet you have two people fighting to be here each day!! I will cherish this amazing picture the rest of my life.”

The photographer also took to Facebook to share her thoughts on the pair, captioning it: "One life is just beginning while the other is coming to an end."

“Both of them have been through a lot this past year. And, as you can see, Kolbie loves looking at his grandpa and his grandpa sure loves him! It's moments like these that make what I do worth it,” she wrote.
